South African government takes bold step over killing of Nigerian by S.A police officers

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) headed by Abike Dabiri-Erewa has released an update on the reported killing of Pius Abiaziem in South Africa on August 23. NIDCOM said it had been in communication with the South African authorities since the incident occurred. “Following the murder of a Nigerian, Pius Abiaziem, in South Africa on 23, Aug 2019, the country's authorities have noted that four members of the South African police service have been arrested and would be charged to court immediately,” NIDCOM said on its social media handle.
        The policemen were reported to have killed the Nigerian national when they interrogated him at his home at the weekend. The matter has been handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate which has confirmed it is looking into the incident.It was also reported that the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, on Wednesday, August 28, said his government is working to end killings of Nigerians in his country. Ramaphosa said this in Japan, venue of the ongoing 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama, after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.The South African leader said he feels pained by the situation, especially looking at the relationship between Nigeria and his country which has spanned many years.
