Chris Smalling, Man United defender, joins Roma on loan until summer of 2020

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has completed a season long loan move to Italian League side AS Roma with the summer transfer window set to close on September 2.
The 29-year-old becomes the third Red Devils star to join a Serie A side after Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez earlier joined Inter Milan this summer. Smalling scored once in 29 Premier League appearances for the Old Trafford side in the 2018-19 season. The England international has however passed medical and he will be unveiled to the fans sometime this weekend. He became surplus to requirement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side after United signed Harry Maguire for about £80 million from Leicester City. Roma signed the defender in a bid to fill the void Greek centre-back Konstantinos Manolas left after joining Napoli in a deal around £32 million this summer. Red Devils boss Solskjaer said: "Chris is on his way over [to Italy]. He's flying over to Rome this morning to do a medical and all the final details. At the moment we've got six centre-backs and it's just something that popped up towards the end [of the European transfer window] in the last couple of days. Chris fancied the chance to go over there; it's a new experience, new adventure. He'll come back better for it because it's a big club, it's a good league. There aren't too many English players who have been playing in Italy so I think he'll enjoy it.
