President Buhari suspends SPIP chairman Obono-Obla

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the immediate suspension of the chairman of the Special Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property (SPIP), Mr Okoi Obono-Obla.
        According to a statement from the presidency posed on micro-blogging site, Twitter, the suspension takes place with immediate effect. “The suspension shall be in effect until the conclusion of ongoing ICPC investigations into a number of cases relating to Mr. Obono-Obla,” the statement noted.Obono-Obla recently accused some powerful people of protecting corrupt individuals under investigations. He said in a statement on Monday, August 12 that the seal-off of his panel's offices is a smear campaign by the powerful individuals. He also stated that his panel has always stayed within the law in its investigations and that it was corrupt individuals that were working against the SPIP. Earlier this week, two groups, Foundation Against Fraud, Indiscipline and Corruption (FAFIC) and Buharists Hangout (BHO), revealed that there are plots to scuttle the activities of the SPIP.
