One killed as suspected herdsmen rape university student to coma in Plateau

There was pandemonium late Sunday night till the early hours of Monday in the Plateau State University, Bokkos, when suspected herders broke into the school premises and raped a-300 level female student, leaving her unconscious.
        According to reports, security operatives, who came for the rescue, also shot and killed a-100 level student, who colleagues said was shot while running in the ensuing melee. The aforementioned incident resulted in a violent protest on Monday morning as students barricaded major entrances to the institution and barred staff from gaining entrance into the school. It was gathered from a student, who pleaded anonymity, “I don’t stay on the campus but I live very close to the school. It was around 10pm or 11pm that the thing happened and I got a call that some unknown people came and raped a student in the hostel and left her unconscious. The security attached to the school went to rescue the girl and on getting there, they asked people to lie down but the guy they killed did not lie down, he was fired as he was running and was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead. The girl that was raped is a 300 level student of Economics department, While the one that was killed was in 100 level, Geography. The student further explained that, “This situation is very sad, we have been talking about the security of students in the school but no effort has been made. These people just keep roaming the school premises with cows; distracting us and dirtying the environment,” he lamented. Who is really safe now?” He asked.
        The State Police Command through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Mathias Terna Tyopev, who confirmed the incident said, “At about 11pm, unknown hoodlums now at large attacked the Plateau State University, Bokkos. According to him, “As a result of the attack, one Sheni Kimati, 25 years old student from the Department of Geography was shot and he was later confirmed dead by a doctor on duty at a Cottage Hospital in Bokkos. There was also a protest staged by the students this morning being 10/06/2019 to drive home their displeasure over the incident. He, however said, “The area is calm now after the Plateau Police Command’s interface with the students and Management of the University. The PPRO also said, efforts were ongoing to ensure that the suspects are arrested. Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, John Agam in a statement said.
        The Vice Chancellor Plateau State University, Bokkos Professor Yohana Izam has confirmed the unfortunate news of an attack on one of its female hostels by suspected hoodlums on the night of Sunday. The incident he said has also left a 100 level Student of Geography in the institution dead after sustaining gunshot injuries. The Vice Chancellor regrets the demise of the promising young man particularly after a successful matriculation held at the University last week Friday. Professor Izam on behalf of the University Community and particularly Management of the Institution is deeply touched by this act of man’s inhumanity to man and sincerely extend the deepest sympathy of Management to the deceased parents and the entire University Community over this shocking development. Meanwhile, Professor Izam has appealed for calm and cooperation especially among the students as the University’s Campus Security Committee in collaboration with the Special Task Force has since swung into action to review the situation with a view of identifying the perpetrators of the crime so that this ugly occurrence can be permanently nipped in the bud, he stressed.
