Girl, 10, dies from female genital mutilation in Sierra Leone

One woman has been arrested by police in Sierra Leone following the death of a 10-year-old girl as a result of female genital mutilation (FGM), according to a Reuters news agency report.

The report says the young girl was cut during initiation at a secret women's society in the northern part of the country. Her death has revived calls seeking an end to the practice, which has not yet being outlawed in the country.

An activist who spoke with Reuters said 67 girls were found to have been circumcised during the initiation. The girls girls are waiting medical examination.

According to UN data, 9 of 10 Sierra Leonean girls have been circumcised.

Female Genital Mutilation typically involves partial or total removal of the female genitalia which can lead to serious health problems.

Police say the woman arrested in charge of the initiations. They added that investigations is ongoing.
