European Court rules brexit could be unilaterally withdrawn by UK without EU's permission

Anti-Brexit campaigners have scored a small win in their fight against Brexit as the European Court of Justice ruled on Monday that the United Kingdom has the ability to unilaterally revoke it's proposal to leave the EU, without the permission of other EU member nations.
The ruling means such decision would not alter the terms of Britain's membership and comes less than 36 hours before Prime minister Theresa May's Brexit deal will be voted on by lawmakers -- widely expected to reject the proposals.
The ECJ said the timing of it's ruling was important as it was to allow lawmakers understand all options available to them as they prepare ahead of voting.
"The United Kingdom is free to revoke unilaterally the notification of its intention to withdraw from the EU," it said. "Such a revocation, decided in accordance with its own national constitutional requirements, would have the effect that the United Kingdom remains in the EU under terms that are unchanged."
The court however noted that such decision must "follow a democratic process", which means it would have to be approved by the British Parliament.
