New Global Terrorism Index ranks Nigeria as 3rd most terrorised nation worldwide

A newly released Global Terrorism Index for 2018 has named Nigeria as the third most terrorised nation in the world following several of fighting terrorist group, Boko Haram, which it says claimed 1,254 with a total of 272 attacks perpetuated in 2017.

This report means Nigeria is placed just below war-torn countries like Iraq, Afghanistan and ahead of Syria and Pakistan.

"It committed 40% more attacks and was responsible for 15% more deaths in 2017, carrying out 272 attacks and killing 1,254 people," the report read.

The report also highlighted increased activities of the Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region, extending to the country's neighbours, with 81% of deaths taking place in Nigeria and 19% in Cameroon and Niger.

"This is up from 70% in 2016 and highlights the decreased reach of the organisation. Eighty-two per cent of deaths in Nigeria took place in the country's Borno State, and another 17% occurred in Adamawa State," the report noted.

The report also noted that there however was a drop in the number of deaths linked to terrorism saying, "Total deaths from terrorism in Nigeria fell to 1,532 in 2017, a drop of 16% from the previous year."

This is in-line with a continuing trend of a decline in terrorism for the third consecutive year, after peaking in 2014.

This "sizeable drop" the report attributed to "the success of Nigeria's Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and international coalitions --especially the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), a combined multinational formation involving Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger."
