Prison riot leaves 25 inmates dead in Tajikistan

Sources in the Central Asian country of Tajikistan have disclosed that a prison riot which broke out at a high-security prison on Wednesday, was caused by an inmate who assaulted an on-duty guard and snatching his rifle.

An interior ministry official says the inmate is believed to be a member of militant group Islamic State.

Several sources say at least 25 inmates were killed. There are conflicting accounts, however, on the number of guards killed (two sources say a warder and a policeman died while another say 3 guards were killed)

The prison which houses prisoners convicted of religious extremism offences, including membership of Islamic State, lies in the northern city of Khujand, around 300 km north of the capital, Dushanbe.
