7.1 magnitude earthquake hits New Caledonia

A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake has rocked the islands of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake hit on Wednesday, with its epicentre about 230km east of the French territory's capital Noumea.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake was about 26km deep.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries
