UPDATED: France's knife attack kills two and injures one, Islamic State claims responsibility

A knife wielding man killed his mother and sister in Trappes, a suburb in Paris, a source from the French Interior Ministry said.

The attack, which took place in the street on Thursday, also left a third person seriously wounded.

The attacker was later shot dead by police when he left the house he had sought refuge in, running towards them in a threatening way, a police source said.

"The police operation is over ... the person was neutralized and is dead," the local prefecture said on Twitter.

"The reason behind the attack and his profile are not known yet and are being looked into," the police source said.

The young man who carried out the attack is said to have shouted in Arabic "Allahu Akbar" by BFM TV though police could not immediately confirm the report.

Despite that, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack which it says was perpetrated its member without providing any evidence.

The group's Amaq news agency through a statement released online said the attacker was an "Islamic State fighter".

However, French counter-terrorism officials have yet to be asked to join the investigation.

Trappes is an underprivileged town situated in an overall wealthy area west of Paris. Dozens of radicalized youths from the town of about 30,000 habitants have left for Syria.
