Two child rapists who tortured an eight-year-old girl, slit her throat and then left her for dead have been sentenced to hang in India.
Irfan Mewati, 20, and Asif Mewati, 24, abducted the child outside her school in Mandsaur while she was waiting for her father in June.
She was taken to a secluded spot where she was raped and then mutilated with a knife before her throat was slit.
The pair then ran off leaving her for dead.
Fortunately, locals found her soon after and rushed her to hospital where she remains with critical injuries.
Hundreds of people gathered in the central state of Madhya Pradesh after the attack, chanting ‘death to rapists'.
The two mean were convicted on Tuesday under a new law allowing for fast-track trials and capital punishment for child rapists.
The last time an execution for rape took place as 14 years ago in Kolkata, eastern India.
Dhananjay Chatterjee, a building guard, was hanged for the 1990 rape and murder of an 18-year-old.
