FIFA World Ranking: Russia biggest movers as France claims top spot following World Cup victory

Football world governing body FIFA has released its world ranking, the first since this summer's World Cup competition, using a new ranking formula which was approved by the FIFA Council in June after a lengthy period of testing.

This has reflected in a much changed table, which sees world cup winners France, rise to the top of the table.

The biggest move was however made by the tournament host nation, Russia, climbing 21 places upward to 49th position, level on points with seventh ranked African team, Nigeria who moved down one spot. Tunisia and Senegal are Africa's highest ranked team sitting at the 24th spot.

Belgium, Brazil holds the 2nd and 3rd spots respectively while World Cup runners up, Croatia entered the top 10, sitting at the 4th position.

Completing the top 10 are Uruguay (up 9 spots) at 5th, England (up 6 spots) at 6th, Portugal (down 3 spots) at 7th, Switzerland (down 2) at 8th, Spain (Up 1) and Denmark (Up 3) leveling up at 9th.

Argentina missed out of the top 10, dropping six places to 11th while the United States, who did not qualify for the World Cup, moved up three places to No. 22.
