India plans to open 18 embassies in Africa

India's Prime Minister Narenda Modi has revealed plans to establish 18 new embassies across Africa.

Modi made the announcement during a speech in the Ugandan parliament, signalling his country's determination to increase its presence on the continent.

Becoming the first serving Indian prime minister to speak in Uganda's parliament, he commended President Yoweri Museveni's policy of encouraging Ugandan Asians who fled the county during Idi Amin's in the 1970s rule to return home.

"Our people are among the many threads that connect Uganda and India together," Mr Modi said.

"Your visionary leadership has helped Ugandans of Indian origin to come back and rebuild the nation that they deeply cherish," he told Mr Museveni.

Joining China in the Africa-aimed investments, Modi said India's market will be made open to African countries to "make it easier and more attractive to trade with India".

"India will work for you and with you; we will stand with you in your endeavours. We will speak for you and with you," Mr Modi added.

He said two-thirds of Indian and Ugandan population was under the age of 35, and "if the future belongs to the youth then this is the time to build".
