Ozil calls time on his career with Germany

German international, Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from the national team on Sunday following the backlash he received for a photo he and fellow national teammate, Ilkay Gundogan took with Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, back in May.
In a lengthy statement released in three parts on his twitter account, the 29 year cited racism and the treatment he received from the German press as reasons he had to drop out from the national team because it made him "no longer want to wear the German national team shirt."
Ozil also lashed out at the president of the German football federation, Reinhard Grindel, who he accused of making him a "scapegoat" for Germany's failure at the just concluded world cup in Russia insisting he will not pay for Grindel's "incompetence and inability to do his job properly".
The Arsenal star also highlighted the actions of a local politician, Bernd Holzhauer, who had called him a "goat-f***er" and Chief of German, Theatre Werner Steer, who wished for the footballer to "p*** back to Anatolia."
Mesut Ozil played for the German senior side for nine years, playing 92 times and scoring 23 goals. He was also a part of the side that lifted the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and also helped Germany to the semi-finals of the 2012 and 2016 European Championships.
