Gunmen kill radio commentator in Philippines

A 38 year old Filipino radio commentator, Joey Llana, has been killed by gunmen as he left his home for work at dawn, on Friday.

The Police Chief Superintendent Arnel Escobal said Llana was shot several times in his van in Daraga town in northeastern Albay province.

The Philippines have an alarming record of killings of journalists.

Officials says the motive for the shooting by the gunmen who escaped after the act was still under investigation but revealed that Llana had received unspecified death threats.

The country's national union for Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists condemned Llana's death saying it would 12th media related attack under President Rodrigo Duterte if investigation shows it was motivated by his professional responsibilities.

The general secretary of the union, Anthony Bellanger beckoned on the government to take necessary action in curbing the culture of violence and impunity against the local media.

"Philippines democracy is weakened every time a journalist is killed," he said
