Cross River lawmaker dies doing exercise

The Cross River's State House of Assembly is in mourning over the passing of a member, Mr. Steven Ukpukpen, who was representing Obudu state constituency in the state.

The lawmaker, Mr. Steven Ukpukpen is said to have slumped during his routine morning exercise on Wednesday morning. He was subsequently rushed to the nearby Navy Clinic where medical officials on duty directed that he should be transferred to another hospital as he was in a critical condition.

On arrival at a private hospital, Mr Ukpukpen was confirmed dead and his corpse was thereafter taken to the Anatomy Unit of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where he was also confirmed dead.

The speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. John Gaul-Lebo, while lamenting the sudden passing of the lawmaker said, "I am still in shock. I do not know what to say. We are in a meeting with the family members and we would later issue a statement on the sad development."

The State Governor, Ben Ayade also expressed his shock and disbelief. He stated this in a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Ita.

In the statement, while commiserating with the immediate family of the lawmaker he said, "I am completely numbed and bewildered that we have lost such a vibrant intellectual who as a lawmaker was deeply committed to the effort of our administration to build enduring legacies and bequeath a strong economy to our people."
