Malaysia convicts first person under "fake news" law

Malaysia's new law against fake news has been used for the first time since it was in early April.
A Danish national has pleaded guilty to breaking the new law against fake news on Monday. The man, whose name was given as Salah Salem Saleh Sulaiman, admitted to making and posting on a video on streaming platform, YouTube, in which he accused emergency services of slow response after a Palestinian Hamas member was gunned down in Kuala Lumpur.
Sulaima, during his court appearance in Kuala Lumpur, said he was not aware of Malaysia's laws.
"I agree I did a mistake because I didn't ask what is the law of this country," he said.
The ‘fake news' legislation makes the deliberate dissemination of false information punishable by up to six years in jail and a hefty fine.
Rights groups had condemned the law, saying it is aimed at cracking down on dissents in the country.
