Organisers confirm runner's death in 2018 London marathon race

A participant in the London Marathon has died after collapsing during the race, organisers have confirmed.

Matt Campbell, a professional chef who featured in the BBC series "MasterChef: The Professionals" in December 2017 -- reaching the final of the programme -- collapsed after 22.5 miles of the race. He later died in hospital. He was 29.

Campbell was running the race in honour of his father, who died 18 months ago.

A statement from race organisers read: "Matt Campbell, aged 29, a professional chef from the Lake District, collapsed at the 22.5 mile mark and, although he received immediate medical treatment on the scene from race doctors, he died later in hospital."

Campbell ran the Manchester Marathon in under three hours earlier this month.

The London Marathon was the hottest on record, with temperatures reaching 23.2C (74 degrees Fahrenheit).
