NASS: Police arrests Senator over stolen mace

The police have arrested suspended lawmaker, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege after unknown persons, alleged to be his supporter, invaded the senate and made away with the chamber's mace.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, representing Delta Central senatorial district was taken in custody on Wednesday afternoon in Abuja, for possible connection with the unknown persons who invaded the Senate by hoodlums.

The Senate had in a statement released earlier accused the senator of sending thugs to seize the senate's symbol of authority.

"This action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such.

"This action is also an affront on the legislature, and the Leadership of the House has come to express their support against this action," the Senate said in a statement by its spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi.

Both houses later gave security chiefs 24 hours to recover the mace and arrest the perpetrators of the act.
