Okagbare breaks 22-year-old African record

Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare has broken a 22-year-old record for African athletes on Saturday. Okagbare kicked off her outdoor campaign for the year at the Wes Kittley Invitational Track and Field Meet at the Abilene Christian University with a timing of 22.04secs in her 200m race.

Mary Onyali had set the previous record of 22.07 seconds in 1996, in Switzerland. Besides topping Mary Onyali's timing, Okagbare now holds the new national record in the women's 200m. She also holds the women's 100m national record.

Wes Kittley Invitational was the 26-year-old first competition of the season and she is list to represent Nigeria alongside 36 other athletes in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, which begins on April 4.
