Zambia's president dismisses impeachment move

Zambia's president Edgar Lungu, has dismissed plans by the country's main opposition party to impeach him.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Lungu said he has confidence that the motion will be unsuccessful, describing thge move as a continuation of the failed court challenge of the presidential election victory by the opposition.

The motion moved by the Zambia's United Party for National Development, was submitted to parliament on Thursday night and is expected to be debated next week.

A third of parliament members have appended their signature on the motion but requires the backing of two-thirds of the lawmakers to succeed.

It was also reported that president Lungu was ill, which rendered him incapable of running the country but he dismissed the reports saying that he is well and healthy.

President Lungu even had to defend his marriage describing it as blissful after reports  emerged that his wife was planning on leaving him.

Since the arrest of opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema last year, the political atmosphere in Zambia has been volatile. Hakainde Hichilema was arrested and detained for four months after his convoy failed to make way for President Lungu's motorcade.
