Hamburg sack CEO and sporting director amid relegation battle

Hamburg have removed CEO Heribert Bruchhagen and sporting director Jens Todt as they head towards their first ever relegation from Bundesliga.

The club has been constantly fighting against the drop from Bundesliga ever for most of the ongoing decade, and with only nine match days to go, they currently trail the playoff place by seven points.

The decision of sacking Bruchhagen and Todt after a meeting of the supervisory board, follow last month's change at the top of the club, when Bernd Hoffmann returned as Hamburg president.

"Following a thorough analysis of the overall situation we opted to make this step, and are now focusing on reframing," Hoffmann said in a statement on the club's official website.

Hoffmann has also named Frank Wettstein as the club's CEO. Wettstein's first move was to sack sporting director Jens Todt.

"We want to reposition ourselves for the future," Wettstein said, adding that the club remains "able to act" amid ongoing contract talks and planning for the new season.

Hamburg are the only club to have played in all Bundesliga seasons since German football turned pro in 1963.
