Geneva Airport Briefly Closed Due To Severe Icy Weather Condition

Switzerland's Geneva airport has been closed for several hours on Thursday due to extremely cold weather which affected many parts of Europe this week. The weather was caused by what Siberian weather system forecasters have called the "beast from the east". It brought snow, strong winds and the coldest temperatures many regions across Europe have experience for many years.

The airport on its website said, "Because of the prevailing weather conditions, Genève Aéroport is currently closed to air traffic until further notice. We therefore advise passengers not to come to the airport for the time being."

More than 40 flights scheduled to fly from Geneva had been canceled, as well as inbound flight. At about 1000 GMT, the airport was reopened to allow for departures as it expects to accept arriving flights from 1200 GMT.

Temperatures in Geneva are expected to rise later in the day, but the freeze will continue somewhere else.  Passengers are advised to check with their airlines on whether upcoming flights would be scheduled for departure.
