Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games' Mascots Unveiled

The mascot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has been unveiled on Wednesday. The mascot, a futuristic blue-checked, doe-eyed character with pointy ears and "special powers" was selected by elementary school kids across Japan.

The yet unnamed mascot, which according to the Tokyo 2020 organisers, has a "strong sense of justice and is very athletic" and also has a magical power which gives it the ability "to move anywhere instantaneously", was chosen from a shortlist of three competitors.

For the Paralympic, the mascot selected wears pink checks derived from Japan's famous cherry blossom and is "usually calm but gets very powerful when needed". Not to be left out, it also has a magical power which makes it capable "talking with stones and the wind. It can also move things by just looking at them"

Both mascots received over 100,000  votes.

16,769 schools across the country took part in the ballot according to the organising committee. It also said visitors to the 2020 games will be greeted by the mascots and help spread the  Olympic and Paralympic spirit.

Mascots, locally known as "yuru-kyara" or "laid-back characters" are popular in Japan. Hello Kitty and Pokemon are among literally thousands available in Japan, and usually represents everything from small communities to prisons.
