President Hassan Rouhani of Iran has stated that the launching of a missile by Yemen's Houthi fighters towards the Saudi Arabian capital city Riyadh was an act of retaliation in response to Saudi's continuous bombing of Yemen.
"How should the Yemeni people react to bombardment of their country. So they are not allowed to use their own weapons? You stop the bombardment first and see if the Yemenis would not do the same," Rouhani was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.
Rouhani also said Saudi Arabia had made a "strategic mistake" by considering the United States and Israel as friends and Iran as an enemy.
Saudi Arabia has continued to insist that sending a missile to Riyadh is a declaration of war not just from Yemen but also from Iran who publicly back the Houthi militia.
In addition, the U.S. government and their mission to the United Nations on Tuesday called for the UN to take strong actions against Iran not just for the bombing on Saturday that was targeted at Riyadh but also for a previous bombing in July 2017. The U.S. Ambassador to the UN is also accusing Iran of violating two UN resolutions through these actions.
