An unknown gunman whole the Police have described as anonymous has shot and killed at least three people near a Walmart Supermarket branch in Colorado, United States on Wednesday.

This incident comes barely a month after Stephen Paddock allegedly shot and killed 58 people in Las Vegas.

Thornton police said the incident was not being currently treated as "an active shooter" situation.

Police investigators revealed that they are currently reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses via the department's Twitter page.

No suspect is currently in custody but police did release pictures of a man they described as a "person of interest" and a car he is believed to have driven.

Gun crime is a regular occurrence in the US and on average 12,000 die of homicides involving a firearm in the country each year. 

The U.S. civilian population has more guns per person than any other civilian population in the world but talks about gun control is still one of the most controversial topics in the country.

Meanwhile, Gun rights advocates continue to argue that he right to bear arms is deeply enshrined in the U.S. Second Amendment.
