- Secretary-General agrees ethnic cleansing is taking place in Myanmar.

- British UN Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said it was the first statement from the Security Council on Myanmar in nine years.
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN security Council have called on the Myanmar government to put an end to the ongoing violence against Rohingya Muslims in the country.

This call comes after the 15 members of the UN security council held a closed door meeting on Wednesday following calls from Britain and Sweden.

"I call on the Myanmar authorities to suspend military action, end the violence, uphold the rule of law and recognise the right of return of all those who have had to leave the country," the UN chief said at the press conference in New York.

This new statement from the head of the United Nations reflects the recent concerns of a top UN human rights official who described the ongoing violence against Rohingya muslims as a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

British UN Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said it was the first statement from the Security Council on Myanmar in nine years.
