Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, the President of Mauritania has just signed a new Law abolishing the country's Senate.

This move comes after 53.73% of the country voted in a referendum to abolish the senate amongst other constitutional reforms.

Opposition groups who opposed this move by the President have accused him of simply laying the groundwork for his third term in office; an accusation which the President has vehemently denied.

President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz initially became President after a Coup in 2008 but subsequently started his first tenure of 5 years after he was elected in 2009 and again in 2014 for another tenure of 5 years.
