Governor Obaseki to introduce Promotion Exams for Civil Servants, NLC disapproves

- Obaseki intends to introduce promotion exams across the civil service.

- Aims to make the workforce more effective.

- NLC disapproves and states it is against Labour Law.
The Edo State Chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress have made known their disagreement with the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki over his plans to implement a compulsory promotion exam for civil servants in the State.

Whilst assessing one of the examination centres in the State, Obaseki addressed Journalists and used the opportunity to refute the claims that the tests or examinations were aimed at testing competence and pruning the State's civil service.

Governor Obaseki insisted that the idea is not new as senior civil servants were already doing similar exams for their promotions.

He said: "Before promotions are made, civil servants need to go through a promotion examination, not competency test. They are already competent and that is why they are working in the service."

"We are not sacking anybody, but we want to strengthen the service so that they can deliver good and efficient services to the state.

"The examination is not compulsory but necessary for promotion as those who needed to be promoted have to write the examination. If you fail to do the test, then there are no bases to promote you," Obaseki said.

Nevertheless, Labour unions in the state have indicated that the idea of testing civil servants for promotion or otherwise in Edo State would not be tolerated as it is in contradiction of the Labour Law.
