Sheriff and Makarfi camp meet to resolve PDP crisis

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, may finally be
coming to an end as factional leaders of the party, Senators Ali Modu
Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi, met in Abuja on Tuesday and declared their
intention to end the problem.
The meeting, which was held at an undisclosed venue in Abuja, was said to have been attended by some members from the two groups.
A joint press conference was convened by representatives of both factions at the end of the meeting, where they said their leaders were working together to reposition the party.
The Makarfi faction was represented by Senator Ben Obi, while Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, represented the Sheriff camp at the briefing.
In the joint statement, which was read by Ojougboh and corroborated by Obi, the two leaders said their meeting was without prejudice to all outstanding matters in court.
The statement read, "This is without prejudice to all outstanding matters in court.
"At a meeting held this morning between the two of us, a holistic review of the state of affairs of our great party, the PDP, was deliberated upon.
"In reviewing the crisis that has engulfed our party since the loss of the 2015 general election after 15 years of uninterrupted leadership at the centre, it became obvious to both of us as principal actors that it was time to heal the wounds and bring about a united, focused and constructive opposition party that could bring sanity to our democratic process."
Both former governors said they were also determined to bring relief to the teeming supporters of the PDP and to the benefit of the country.
They said based on the above, they had agreed to consult widely with all relevant organs of the party and also set up a joint committee "that will carry out a holistic reconciliation of all aggrieved segments of our party across the country and in Diaspora."
They called on all members of the PDP to remain calm and refrain from any actions and utterances that could further bring about divisions or dispute within the party.
