Anambra State debunks claims of Lassa fever outbreak

Claims of an outbreak of Lassa Fever in Anambra State have been debunked by the State Government.
Reacting to reports of the fever in his state on Monday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike, said that what the state had was not an outbreak, but a referral case of a doctor brought in from Delta State.
Akabuike said that the doctor though from Anambra state, practiced in Asaba, and was refereed to Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.
The doctor was referred to the hospital on August 15 by 3:19pm local time but died after three hours of management.
To guard against the spread of the disease, efforts are being made to trace persons that had come in contact with the dead doctor.
Mr Akabuike said 19 people were currently on low risk, with two others on high risk.
He, however, told reporters that the contacts were permanently on surveillance.
On Monday, Delta State recorded a fresh case of Lassa Fever in the State Capital, Asaba.
The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge, confirmed the case and the death of a medical doctor who resides and owns a hospital in Asaba.
He stated that the doctor died three hours after admission at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, after a blood sample earlier collected was confirmed to be positive.
