Military explains reason for deployment of troops and equipment to Bayelsa

On Tuesday, the Nigerian military, disclosed that it deployed troops and equipment to Bayelsa State in order to forestall the threat of secession.
The personnel and hardware were deployed on Monday in response to threats by a militant group, the Adaka Boro Avengers, to declare an Independent state of Niger Delta on that same day.
The group reportedly shelved the plan after the intervention of leaders including former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The joint military force responsible for security in the Niger Delta, Operation Delta Safe, said that it would however, remain "professional and civil" in dealing with security threats by militant groups in the area.
Commander of the joint operation, Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, who made the statement in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital, also said that the deployment of troops and equipment noticed on Monday at Kaiama in Bayelsa was part of normal operations to keep the region safe.
