Nigerian troops kill 11 suspected criminals in Zamfara

Troops of 223 Battalion involved in a field training code named "Exercise Harbin Kunama" have killed 11 suspected cattle rustlers in different forests in Zamfara State.

They undertook the exercise as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day celebration (NADCEL) 2016.

In a statement by the Army spokesman, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, said that the troops on routine patrol engaged the bandits in exchange of gunfire at Madaka village in Maru Local Government Area and Gangamai village in Dansadau Local Government of the state where they killed nine and two of the bandits, respectively.

Usman said: "As part of the activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2016, troops involved in live field training exercise code named ‘Exercise Harbin Kunama' have intensified patrol of the various forests in Zamfara Sate. It is in line with that troops of 223 Battalion while on patrol, encountered armed bandits at Madaka village, Maru LGA in which they killed nine armed Bandits.

"Another patrol team also carried out a raid on an armed bandits and cattle rustlers' camp at Gobirawan Kwacha where they killed two armed bandits and recovered a machete."

Col. Usman said that another team carried out a raid on cattle rustlers and armed bandits' camp at Gidan Maijaja in Dansadau General Area, where on citing the approaching troops, the rustlers and armed bandits fled in disarray, abandoning 85 cows, 37 sheep and a donkey.

He added that local vigilantes at Yargada village, Gusau Local Government Area apprehended a fleeing suspected armed bandit and handed him over to troops deployed at Magami.

Items recovered during the raids include three AK 47 rifles, AK 47 rifles magazines, three rounds of 7. 62mm special ammunition, one machete, 24 motorcycles, two dane guns and bags containing marijuana.
 
In another development, two women were abducted and raped in the bush in the area. One of the victims left her eight-month-old baby at home when she was abducted.

Police sources said the nursing mother rushed out of her home to get something for the family when she was abducted.

A resident of the community disclosed that the vigilantes had been seeing traces of Fulani footprints along the bush path which they followed to track the suspects.

The chairman of the Fulani vigilante group, Barau Samai'ila, who went after the suspects, was allegedly shot dead.
The police said that the case was under investigation.
