N1.4trn fine: Reps say MTN may not make full payment

MTN Nigeria may not be made to make full payment of the total N1.4 trillion fine imposed on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission. This was disclosed on Thursday, by the House of Representatives.
Alhaji Ahmed Bichi, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on ICT, disclosed this at the 2016 edition of the Nigerian Internet Governance Forum, NIGF, holding in Abuja.
Bichi said joint consultations between a committee which was set up by the house and representatives of the Ministry of Communications were ongoing on the matter; and that they would make the outcome of their deliberations public at its conclusion.
He disclosed that the National Assembly sought a quick resolution of the matter in the interest of all parties, and that MTN Nigeria might not be subjected to full payment of the fine. "Consultations are going on between a committee set up by us and people from Ministry of Communications and I will be constrained to say anything on it now.
"They are looking into it and they are going to talk with the company,  that is MTN, as soon they finish their consultations.
"I think in the next few weeks, we should be able to tell Nigerians the update. Let me tell you that the update would be favorable  to Nigeria. No, the fine has not been waved completely. They will pay the money, but it may not be the exact thing," he added.
