FG sacks 106 staff of varsity staff schools

At least 106 workers of University Staff schools in the country have been allegedly sacked by the Federal Government, while another 76 members from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Osun State were also said to be on the waiting list of government for sack.
Meanwhile, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, University of Abuja chapter has accused the management of the university for engaging "illegally" over 200 staff without following the due process of employment.
This hint was disclosed yesterday at the SSANU's ongoing NEC meeting at the Michael Imoudu National Institute for a labour Studies, MINILS, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The Deputy President of SSANU, Comrade Moses Adeniyi Aogo, who represented the President of the association, Comrade Samson Ugwoke said that the staff of university staff school at the OAU may be given the way out by next month by the Federal Government.
Recall that the Federal Government through the Salary Income and Wages Commission, had in 2015 directed Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities to delist names of workers of university staff schools from the government payroll latest December last year.
SSANU had protested the decision of government saying that it ran contrary to the agreement entered between government and the association, and that the directive was discriminatory as it did not affect police, army or navy schools.
The association further alleged that the directive could put over 2,000 staff the schools in the labour market, thereby compounding the already unemployment problem in the country.
Giving situation reports at the NEC meeting, SSANU disclosed that 71 staff of unity schools from the University of Ilorin had already been laid off and another 45 from the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA.
The Vice President of SSANU, Western zone, Comrade Alfred Jimoh said that the association from the zone was already bearing the brunt as it had taken the responsibility to pat stipends to the affected workers for their upkeep.
He also said that disengagement letter had not been issued to the 76 staff of the OAU staff school, but their salaries had been stopped since February as they were paid salary last in January.
He further said that the affected staff of staff schools in University of Ilorin and the Federal University of Technology Akure have taken the matter to court on behalf of their members separately and collective, while SSANU is at the National Industrial Court over the matter and that between the end of May and June, the court may deliver judgement on it.
Meanwhile, SSANU branch chairman of University of Abuja, Comrade Jude Nwabueze has accused the management of the university of embarking on recruitment of workers without due recourse to due process.
Comrade Nwabueze who called on members of association to rise up and challenge some of the abnormally perpetuated by the university management said he had taken up the matter with the Federal Character Commission, FCC, which he said had not given credence to the employment.
He alleged that because the "illegal" employees were not recognised by the government, the management had decided to cut short salaries of authentic staff to accommodate the newly recruited ones.
