Fayose, Kashamu disagree over Buhari

The Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Prince Buruji Kashamu, has explained why he does not share the same views of the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Peter Ayo Fayose, on the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Senator Kashamu, who admitted that Fayose is his friend, said he had repeatedly told the governor to show understanding with the Federal Government because of its peculiar challenges.

In an interview with journalists in Lagos, Senator Kashamu denied promoting any presidential ticket ahead of 2019.He also refuted insinuations in some quarters that he was not backing a possible Modu Sheriff/Fayose presidential ticket on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) because of his support for the North to produce the next national chairman of the party.

Already, the PDP has zoned its presidency to the North while the North East zone where Sheriff hails from will produce the PDP national chairman at the end of the interim leadership of the party. It is against this backdrop that there are fears that Fayose's undying support for Sheriff is targeted at the two pairing for the 2019 presidential race.

In a reaction to the insinuations and other national issues, Senator Kashamu said: "I laugh when people ascribe so much to me. Despite being my friend, it is common knowledge that Governor Fayose and I have divergent views on current political issues as well as the policies and programmes of the present government. I have often told him that the Federal Government, like other levels of government at the state and local governments, has its challenges and shortcomings. So, there is no need pontificating as if one is better than the other, when the oaths of office and allegiance taken when being sworn-in, makes every government official an inseparable part of the government of the Federation."

Although Governor Fayose has denied any presidential ambition or ticket with Sheriff, Buruji said that he is opposed to the impression that the Governor can determine the future or limit the political aspirations of others because of his present position. Kashamu said that since Nigerians have in recent times through elections demonstrated that power indeed belongs to them, nobody can usurp the power of the people to choose their leaders, adding that, "Power belongs to Allah and He decides through the people whom He will give it to."

Commenting on some South West PDP leaders, including Chief Bode George, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe and Doyin Okupe's condemnation of his position on the forthcoming PDP national leadership, Prince Kashamu said that no amount of abuse will make him descend into the arena. "I am focused on what I and other well-meaning leaders think is in the best interest of the good and highly regarded people of the South West and the party. They can call us any name they want to call us; it does not move me. I have done nothing wrong. At least, no one has accused me of stealing the party's campaign funds and materials. Neither have I abused my office as a Senator. Of course, every practical politician knows that those they refer to as ragamuffins are prolific strikers and foot soldiers; they are the ones who can go out to get things done and then report back to our esteemed leaders who are naturally slowing down as they advance in years."
