IGP deploys detectives to probe Rivers homicides

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, says he has dispatched a team of homicide officers from Abuja to probe the recent alleged killing of about 19 persons in Ahoada Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Arase revealed this on Monday at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Port Harcourt during his official launch of the new spy police uniform.
He declared that criminals will never overwhelm the police and directed the state Commissioner of Police to go after the perpetrators and arrest them for prosecution.

"The incident at Ahoada East is undergoing investigation. I have dispatched a team of homicide officers from Abuja to take over the case and ensure that the incident is properly investigated.

"I have told the Commissioner of Police that he must go after anyone who takes the life of another and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book," he said.

The Police boss frowned at the proliferation of firearms in the country, saying that it is unacceptable, not only in Rivers, but across the country.
"I can assure the people of this country that we are going to clampdown on these criminals, we will arrest them, and we will amputate them from our society. We will not allow a group of gangster criminals overwhelm the State."

Again, Arase maintained his stand that police is supposed to be apolitical and advised his officers to be professionals in performing their duties.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kimo Musa, confirmed that four persons were killed in Ulapata community in Ahoada East Local Government Area and hinted that police Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) had been stationed in strategic places in the council to ensure law and order.

Earlier, the Managing Director of SPDC and Country Chair, Mr. Osagie Okunbor, said the IGP being with then to launch the spy police uniform on a public holiday demonstrates his personal sense of professionalism to the cause of security and welfare of his officers.

He stressed that the spy group had grown from a small SPDC Police patrolling its pipelines right of way to a disciplined and well structured unit of the Nigeria Police.
