Court to Fed Govt: let Dasuki have access to his lawyer

Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf of an Abuja High Court yesterday ordered the Federal Government to allow former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col Sambo Dasuki, to have access to his lawyer during working hours to enable him defend himself in the charges brought against him by government.
Justice Baba-Yusuf gave the order following the application by Dasuki's lead Counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), that they had no access to him.
Daudu had told the court that because they had no access to him, they could not adequately prepare for his defence.
Dasuki, former Director of Finance, Office of the National Security Adviser, Shuaibu Salisu and Aminu Baba-Kusa, former NNPC Executive Director, were arraigned for diversion of N13.6 billion meant for purchase arms.
The others were Acacia Holding Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited.
At the resumed hearing yesterday, Mr Adebisi Adeniyi, who held the brief for Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), informed the court that they were ready with their witnesses.
Dasuki's Counsel, Daudu, objected and applied for long adjournment because the defence had no access to Dasuki and had an application before the Court of Appeal.
Daudu said that the application before the appellate court was for stay of proceedings.
Having listened to all submissions made by both parties, Yusuf-Hussein gave an order granting Dasuki access to his counsels. He also adjourned the matter to Tuesday, May 3, for commencement of trial.
The accused person are facing a criminal trial bordering on the diversion of public funds, abuse of public trust and money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
