Heavy rains kill nearly 50 in Pakistan

At least 49 people died in Pakistan due to heavy rains that started last week and continued through the weekend, Ahmad Kamal, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority said on Monday.

The report said that majority of deaths and injuries were caused by collapsing houses.

Eighty people were injured in the downpours.

It said that the south-western province of Balochistan was worst hit.

According to the report, the heavy rainfall started there on Thursday and later spread to other parts of the country,

Kamal said that 18 people died in Balochistan, 15 in the north-western tribal region, 10 in the eastern province of Punjab and six in the north-west Khyber-Pakhtunhwa province.

Heavy downpours were expected to continue in northern Pakistan through Tuesday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said. (dpa/NAN)
